When I look back on my most recent space shuttle flight, I am convinced that my problems were most severe and uncommon. I have every right to be paranoid. There are simply times, exact and specific, when things go consistently against you; when bad luck is the only luck at hand; when, try as you might, you just can't change bad luck into good. And it seems that no one, or nothing, can really help you. I was blessed with a crew of four trained, seasoned and talented astronauts, but even their collective dedication and loyalty couldn't help me overcome the crisis and disasters I encountered. Merit and excellent qualifications were the basis on which my crew of astronauts and I were selected to command the Atlantis II space shuttle Mission, which had been originally scheduled to be second in line to launch five months before the terrible Challenger tragedy occurred in January, 1986, killing all seven of its crew-six astronauts and one schoolteacher-just one minute and thirteen seconds after a rather successful liftoff from its Cape Canaveral launch pad.

This anthology is the first to address the impact of lynching on U.S. theater and culture. By focusing on women’s unique view of lynching, this collection of plays reveals a social history of interracial cooperation between black and white women and an artistic tradition that continues to evolve through the work of African American women artists. This collection includes examples of both one-act and full-length dramas written over a time span of approximately eighty years (1916-1994). Production styles represented range from the early realism of Angelina Weld Grimke’s Rachel (1916) to the folk drama influences of Georgia Douglas Johnson’s Sunday Morning in the South (1925), to the experimental techniques of bifurcated characters and multiple narratives found in Endesha Ida Mae Holland’s Miss Ida B. Wells (1983). Lillian Smith’s Strange Fruit (1945), based on her controversial and best selling novel, is published here for the first time. Unfamiliar plays by lesser known playwrights such as Corrie Crandall Howell’s The Forfeit (1925) and recent plays by contemporary playwrights such as Sandra Seaton’s The Bridge Party (1989) and Michon Boston’s Iola’s Letter (1994) demonstrate the development of the genre and continuation of the tradition. Introductory essays by the editors provide a historical and critical context for the plays and link them to the wider art world through the work of visual artists, musicians, and choreographers such as Meta Vaux Warrick Fuller, Lois Malou Jones, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Katherine Dunham, and Pearl Primus. Current language usage seems inadequate to express the perspective represented by these plays. What should we call a collection of plays by black and white women addressing the cultural legacy of lynching? Since the plays reflect black women’s leadership in the drive for interracial cooperation in the anti-lynching movement, perhaps “a womanist/feminist drama” best describes this landmark exploration of women’s contribution to the American stage.

Published on 2008-12-10 by Vintage

This one-of-a-kind anthology features thirty-six hilarious short plays by major American playwrights and emerging new voices, all guaranteed to send readers and audiences into peals of laughter. From the surrealistic wit of Steve Martin's |The Zig-Zag Woman| to the biting political satire of Steven Dietz's |The Spot,| from Christopher Durang's wonderfully loopy |Wanda's Visit| to Shel Silverstein's supremely twisted |The Best Daddy,| there's something in here to make everyone laugh. There are plays for casts of all sizes, from monologues to large ensembles, with diverse and challenging roles for actors of every age and type. Even the titles are funny: Mark O'Donnell's |There Shall Be No Bottom (a bad play for worse actors),| Elaine May's |The Way of All Fish,| and Alan Ball's |Your Mother's Butt.| A bonanza for theatergoers, performers, and comedy fans, Laugh Lines will bring down the house. From the Trade Paperback edition.

By:Aristophanes

The plays in this volume all contain Aristophanes' trademark bawdy comedy and dazzling verbal agility. In THE BIRDS, two frustrated Athenians join the birds to build the utopian city of 'Much Cuckoo in the Clouds'. THE KNIGHTS is a venomous satire on Cleon, a prominent Athenian demagogue, while THE ASSEMBLY WOMEN deals with the battle of the sexes as the women of Athens infiltrate the all-male Assembly in disguise. The lengthy conflict with Sparta is the subject of PEACE, inspired by the hope of a settlement in 421 BC, and WEALTH reflects on the economic catastrophe that hit Athens after the war.

As prose dramatic texts, Plato's dialogues would have been read by their original audience as an alternative type of theatrical composition. The `paradox' of the dialogue form is explained by his appropriation of the discourse of theatre, the dominant public mode of communication of his time. The oral performance of his works is suggested both by the pragmatics of the publication of literary texts in the classical period and by his original role as a Socratic dialogue-writer and the creator of a fourth dramatic genre. Support comes from a number of pieces of evidence, from a statue of Sokrates in the Academy (fourth century BC) to a mosaic of Sokrates in Mytilene (fourth century AD), which point to a centuries-old tradition of treating the dialogues in the context of performance literature and testify to the significance of the image of `Plato the prose dramatist' for his original and subsequent audiences.

The Drama of Ideas PDF
By:Martin Puchner
Published on 2010-04-14 by Oxford University Press

Most philosophy has rejected the theater, denouncing it as a place of illusion or moral decay; the theater in turn has rejected philosophy, insisting that drama deals in actions, not ideas. Challenging both views, The Drama of Ideas shows that theater and philosophy have been crucially intertwined from the start. Plato is the presiding genius of this alternative history. The Drama of Ideas presents Plato not only as a theorist of drama, but also as a dramatist himself, one who developed a dialogue-based dramaturgy that differs markedly from the standard, Aristotelian view of theater. Puchner discovers scores of dramatic adaptations of Platonic dialogues, the most immediate proof of Plato's hitherto unrecognized influence on theater history. Drawing on these adaptations, Puchner shows that Plato was central to modern drama as well, with figures such as Wilde, Shaw, Pirandello, Brecht, and Stoppard using Plato to create a new drama of ideas. Puchner then considers complementary developments in philosophy, offering a theatrical history of philosophy that includes Kierkegaard, Nietzsche, Burke, Sartre, Camus, and Deleuze. These philosophers proceed with constant reference to theater, using theatrical terms, concepts, and even dramatic techniques in their writings. The Drama of Ideas mobilizes this double history of philosophical theater and theatrical philosophy to subject current habits of thought to critical scrutiny. In dialogue with contemporary thinkers such as Martha Nussbaum, Iris Murdoch, and Alain Badiou, Puchner formulates the contours of a |dramatic Platonism.| This new Platonism does not seek to return to an idealist theory of forms, but it does point beyond the reigning philosophies of the body, of materialism and of cultural relativism.

The Acharnians PDF
By:Aristophanes
Published on 2015-09-21 by Aristophanes

The Acharnians or Acharnians is the third play — and the earliest of the eleven surviving plays — by the Athenian playwright Aristophanes. It was produced in 425 BCE on behalf of the young dramatist by an associate, Callistratus, and it won first place at the Lenaia festival. The play is notable for its absurd humour, its imaginative appeal for an end to the Peloponnesian War and for the author's spirited response to condemnations of his previous play, The Babylonians, by politicians such as Cleon, who had reviled it as a slander against the Athenian polis. In The Acharnians, Aristophanes reveals his resolve not to yield to attempts at political intimidation. Along with the other surviving plays of Aristophanes, The Acharnians is one of the few - and oldest - surviving examples of a highly satirical genre of drama known as Old Comedy.
